Understanding the Causes and Symptoms of Dry Eye

Dry eye affects more than 4 million Australians and often becomes a chronic issue. In January 2020, Optometry Australia reported that 77% of Australians had experienced dry eye symptoms, yet only 26% had consulted an optometrist for treatment options.

What Causes Dry Eye?
Dry eye occurs when your eyes don’t receive enough lubrication due to a decrease in the quality or quantity of your tears. Your tear film has three essential layers that work together to keep your eyes moist and protected. When anything disrupts this delicate balance, your tears can evaporate too quickly or become unstable, leading to dryness and inflammation of the cornea (the front surface of your eye).

How Can You Manage Dry Eye?
Although managing dry eye can be challenging, you can take several simple steps to reduce symptoms and improve comfort:

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to support healthy tear production and reduce dry eye symptoms.

  • Blink More Often: Blinking helps refresh your tear film. Make a conscious effort to blink more, especially when using digital screens or focusing for long periods.

  • Improve Indoor Humidity: Use a humidifier in your home or office, particularly during colder months, to maintain optimal humidity and prevent your tears from evaporating too quickly.

  • Protect Your Eyes Outdoors: Wear sunglasses to shield your eyes from UV rays and wind. Harsh weather conditions can worsen dryness and irritation.

  • Use Artificial Tears: Over-the-counter lubricating eye drops can provide temporary relief.
